FTP Virtual or Web File Manager?

Admin:

==OverView==
There are (at least) two options if you want to share/distribute files on on your web site at SWCP: a Virtual FTP Server, or Web File Manager software. Which is better? Well, that depends. Here is a rundown of the pro's and con's of each.

===FTP Site===

A Virtual FTP Site is old-school. The FTP protocol existed on the Internet long before there was a World Wide Web. You access it with an FTP program such as WS_FTP, FileZilla, SecureFX, etc. You can '''download''' files from an FTP site with a web browser, but most browsers have minimal support for uploading.

You may want to control access to the FTP site, for example to only allow certain people to download particular files. You can do this by adding user accounts. Each account can have different permissions, be restricted to a specific directory, be allowed (or denied) access to upload or download, etc.

===Web File Manager===

Southwest Cyberport has licensed a File Manager program which we can install on your web site. It's called "FileManager". You (the administrator of the site) use a web interface to add/remove users and set their permissions to your liking. As with FTP, you can allow different users to access particular directories, and individually control their ability to upload or download. Additionally you can assign "quotas" to each user, so they can only consume a certain amount of disk space. Or you can let them run free and consume as much as you have available.

==Which is Better?==
This depends on your specific requirements. Some of the factors are:
* How computer savvy are the end-users that will be doing the uploading/downloading?
* How computer savvy is the site admin who will be dealing with issues, adding/removing users, etc.?
* Does SSL matter?
* Do you need to support legacy software?
* Will there be automated processes which only understand FTP?
* Do you need to support batch transfers?

The following sections address several specific issues that might or might not be important in your particular situation. For each one we compare the FTP Server option to the FileManager option.

===Tech-Savvy End Users?===
====FTP Site====
If you need your end-users to upload files, or to download with specific accounts, they will almost certainly need to use a dedicated FTP program. These days, many users have never used an FTP program, so this step can present a significant barrier. FileZilla is a good FTP program available for free download and works on Windows, Macs, and Linux.

If just want the end-users to download files that are not password-protected, then you can give them an "ftp" URL, such as ftp://ftp.swcp.com/pub/1meg and they can download that with their web browser. But if you want them to log in, they'll need an FTP program.

====Web File Manager====
The only tool the user needs to access the files, with or without passwords, for both uploading and downloading, is their web browser.

===Tech-Savvy Site Admin?===

====FTP Site====
If the person responsible for administering the site is a computer person, an FTP site will be easy for them to deal with. For example, end-users who are behind a NAT firewall may have trouble accessing an FTP site unless they turn on the "PASV" option.

====Web File Manager====
If the site admin is not a computer geek, they may find the FTP site somewhat cryptic, and some of the problems that arise will be confusing and unexpected. If the mention of NAT and PASV above sounds like gibberish to you, you'll be more comfortable with the FileManager approach.

===Secure Transfers?===
====FTP Site====
It is possible to do encrypted file transfers to/from an FTP site using SFTP. This utilizes an SSL certificate, just like you would use to protect a web site with HTTPS. The downsides here are:
* The end-user needs software that supports SFTP instead of just FTP. Most modern FTP software does this, but many older programs do not.
* You will need an SSL certificate devoted to this process, which will cost about $95/yr.

====Web File Manager====
The FileManager is installed on your web site, so if you already have an SSL certificate for your site, then FileManager can make use of it. If you need to ensure that users only access the site with SSL, we can configure the web server to force all connections to the FileManager portion of your site to use SSL. If you don't already have an SSL certificate, you would have to add one, just like with an FTP site. However, the end user will not have to do anything special to access the site with SSL -- their web browser already supports it.

   DSL
MacOS-X

====Question or Symptom====
You poked around the BroadMax web config screens and now it is routing
as well as a baked cod.

====Resolution====
''' IMPORTANT NOTE '''
Please make sure you doesn't have any wacky port forwarding or ip space
issues before starting this process.

The Broadmax router has both a web based GUI and a telnet interface. Both can be
used to configure the device.
Here is how to configure the device thru the web interface from factory defaults.
NOTE: (If the router is not responding and all the lights are in their proper
state you can reset all the settings to factory default by pressing a paper clip
into the little hole on the bottom of the BroadMax three times).

1. Configure your ethernet device to have an ip address on the same subnet as
the Broadmax, by default the Broadmax's ethernet ip address is
192.168.0.1.
2. Fire up a web browser and point it to 192.168.0.1
3. You will be prompted for a username and password use broadmax/broadmax
4. Click the Home tab -> Quick Configuration
5. Change Encapsulation to PPPoA VC-Mux
6. Change VCI from 35 to 32
7. Change Bridge to disable
8. Change Default Route to Enable
9. Enter the username and password
10. Enter the DNS nameserver ips and click the Submit button
11. Click on the Bridging Tab and set all the options to disable and click the
Submit button
12. Click on the Admin tab
13. Click on the Commit and Reboot link
14. Click the Commit button and wait for the page to refresh
15. Click on the Reboot button and wait for the page to refresh and all the
lights to become steady
16. The customer will now be able to surf web.

If the customer wants the BroadMax to function as a DHCP server do the following.
1. Click on the LAN tab
2. Click on the DHCP Mode Link
3. Switch the DHCP Mode to Server and click submit
4. Click on the DHCP Server Link
5. This screen gives you a spot to enter the DHCP address range.
If this is configured but not working properly you can remove each of the
non-functioning address ranges one at a time by clicking the trash can icon.
6. Click the Add button
7. Enter the Start Ip Address (example 192.168.0.2)
8. Enter the End Ip Address (example 192.168.0.100)
9. Enter the NetMask (example 255.255.255.0)
10. Enter the Domain (example swcp.com)
11. Enter the Gateway Address (example 192.168.0.1)
12. Enter the DNS ips
13. Click the Submit button
14. Click the Admin tab click commit and click reboot.

That should be it the broadmax should now be configured. You can have the
customer verify that things seem to be working by clicking on the Home tab.
There should now be an entry to ppp-0 with an ip address and the status light
should be green.

Note: The BroadMax is the best CPE I have ever worked with and very
configurable. It seems to be well worth the $100.
In ''LocalSettings.php'' you'll need to edit or add the following lines:
$wgEnableUploads       = true;
The navigation bar on the left-hand side is editable, like any wiki page (well almost).
The page name is MediaWiki:Sidebar.

The entries look a little different than a normal wiki page and are assumed to be a page
reference. For example, if you want to change the "navigation" box to contain 2 links,
one to your knowledge base and one to your products list, the page should look like:

* navigation
** Knowledge Base|Our Knowledge Base
** Products|The XYZ Product List

You will need to be the admin to edit this item.
To add a new box of links, just add a new one-star item, then follow it with links.
Note: MediaWiki insists on your having the "alias" with a link. If it doesn't understand
a link it will not display it. If none of your links within a section are valid it will
not display the section.

The page name is MediaWiki:Sidebar.

The entries look a little different than a normal wiki page and are assumed to be a page
reference. For example, if you want to change the "navigation" box to contain 2 links,
one to your knowledge base and one to your products list, the page should look like:

** Products|The XYZ Product List
You will need to be the admin to edit this item.
To add a new box of links, just add a new one-star item, then follow it with links.
Note: MediaWiki insists on your having the "alias" with a link. If it doesn't understand
a link it will not display it. If none of your links within a section are valid it will
not display the section.

===How do I moderate posts on my phpBB?===
Article:229
Created:2003-05-27 16:59:23
Categories:
phpBB - bulletin board

====Question or Symptom====
The phpBB bulletin board system is moderated in two ways, via the topic
itself and also through a special web control panel appropriately named,
the "Moderator CP" (or Mod CP for short).

====Resolution====
A bulletin board system is a collection of Forums, (topics of interest).
These Forums can allow posting by anyone or can be moderated. A moderated
forum has a person/group of people responsible for keeping the discussion
on topic and civil.

Within your bulletin board you can have a single moderator for all Forums
a group of moderators or different moderators for each Forum. The moderator
may accept or reject a post, or edit it if required. A thread within a Forum
is a series of posts that pertain to one topic. A moderator may more a
thread from one Forum to another if it's in the incorrect Forum. Below are
instructions for how to accomplish these tasks.

Administrators, have full access to the board and may add and remove
moderators, they can also change any aspect of the board and moderate any
forum. You do not have to be listed as a moderator, if you are an admin,
(to moderate topics).

To moderate an individual topic make sure you are logged into an
administrator account, or have moderator rights on the forum the topic
resides in.

At the bottom left hand corner of the topic you will find a series of
buttons that represent various moderative functions, in each reply you
will also find an "X" button that can delete single replies. Moderators
and administrators can also edit any post in the topic, by selecting the
edit button of that post.

The large rounded "X" button located next to the other moderator links will
delete the entire thread. Once the thread is deleted there is no way to
recover it, so use this feature with caution.

To the right of the delete thread button, we also have a "move thread" tool.
This tool will allow you to move a thread from one forum to another (i.e
move "Cool Cars" to the Cars forum from the Books forum). If "Leave Shadow
Topic" is checked, then a "redirect" will be placed in the old form. It
will have the moved icon and will read, "Moved: Topic Name." When users click
the topic it will redirect them to the real topic in its new forum. To
continue moving the thread click Yes, and to abort click No.

Next to the move icon, we have a lock icon. When you click this option, the
topic will become locked and non-administrators/moderators will no longer
be able to add replies to the thread. After "locking" the lock icon is replaced
with a lock icon with the shackle open, by clicking this option the topic
can be unlocked; and normal users can resume posting. Administrators and
moderators can still post in a "locked" topic, by clicking the "locked"
button next to New Topic.

The final topic moderation option is, split topic. Split topic will provide
you a screen that shows every reply with a checkbox by it. When you click
the replies you want, choose a new topic title for the split thread, and a forum
you would like the topic to be placed. When you're reading press the
"Split selected posts." This will split the replies into a new topic.
"Split from selected post" will remove the replies NOT selected and split them.

A final way to moderate forums is through the Mod CP or Moderator Control Panel.
The Mod CP is a way to "mass moderate" topics, and will allow you to mass
lock/unlock, move and delete topics. To access the Mod CP, go to the forum you
wish to mass moderate, at the bottom right, there is a link that
says "moderate this forum." Select this link to go to the CP. Once in the CP,
you can select topics via their respective checkboxes and perform mod
functions on them via the buttons below.
