There are many generous people out on the internet who like to show off their work and allow other people to build on things they've produced. It is important to carefully read the terms of use that are provided with any person's work. Many people are glad to have you use their source material provide it isn't for commercial work. Some really want attribution on your website if you use their source material. No-one wants you to take their work and say it's yours, or resell it as is for profit, but there are many generous folks who will let you use their work even in commerical ventures. An email mailbox is some disk space on a mail server where email is stored. At SWCP each
account has mailbox storage allocated and the email address for that account is account@swcp.com.
We refer to this as your SWCP email address.
Domain Aliases
You may have a domain name that you've registered for your business with the intention of having
a website and you'd probably like to use it for email as well. The way this works is we set up an
alias using your domain to be directed to an email mailbox. This alias doesn't have any physical
storage space. It just acts as a redirection.

Think of it like this: if you're an author and you have a pseudonym your fans may write to you using
your pseudonym. You publishing company will forward that mail to your actual address without the fans
having to know where you live. A domain alias is like that. And it can be redirected to several
different email mailboxes.

Managing your domain aliases
If your domain is registered with SWCP you can set up unlimited email aliases from the
members dashboard mp.swcp.com. Login and go to "Mail Tools" then
"Domain Email Aliases". From there you can select the domain you want to work on and set
up your aliases. They can be sent to your SWCP email addresses or to offsite email addresses
like Gmail.

Jamii: /* OBSOLETE */

__NOTOC__
OBSOLETE
The information in this article is from the era of Dial-up Internet access. We no longer work with iPass and I'm sure you have
better methods of getting internet access than dial-up.
OBSOLETE
Accessing your Internet account while traveling can be challenging: Long-distance charges can be high, and long distance telephone lines tend to be noisy. SWCP provides several login schemes and advice for making this less painful.
800 Number
We have an 800 number available for travelers to use. This is billed at $10/hour (about 17 cents/minute -- sometimes less expensive than regular long distance charges, but not always). Time connected to the 800 line doesn't count against your pool of local dial-up hours, so you aren't getting charged twice for the same connect time. When using the 800 number all you have to change in your setup is the phone number. All other settings should remain the same.

iPass
A lower-cost alternative to the 800 number is our iPass service. iPass provides roaming services for ISPs. With the iPass service you can dial a local number in most major cities in the US and many international locations for a much smaller hourly charge. For example most major US cities are available at about $3.12/hour (only a little over 4 cents a minute).

Using iPass is a little more complex than the 800 number. You need to download a program from our web site that will be your dialer program. This free software accesses a phonebook offering you a list of supported cities. For further information see Info & Tools: Traveling with iPass from our main site's navigation menu.

Charges:
* Hourly charge: Based on your particular location. The dialing program will list the hourly charge next to the city.
If you plan to use wireless or ethernet connections, please visit the iPass download page available from the
Members Section of our web site from pricing information.
(Dial-up is usually about $3.12/hour in the continental United States. This is not true of the 'All-Cities' POPs)

Because iPass is actually dialing into another ISP in the city in which you're staying, the following section on using a different ISP while traveling also applies to iPass users.

Using another ISP
Many people have Internet service available through their employers, or have multiple Internet Service Providers. You shouldn't have any problem using multiple providers, but there are a few caveats you should be aware of.

Sending mail
Due to the increase of unscrupulous marketing companies (spammers) it is no longer possible to run a friendly, trusting mail server. Spammers use unprotected mail servers to bounce unsolicited bulk email in order to make is appear the mail is coming from a reputable source, and thus get around blocks and filters that would otherwise stop them.

What does this have to do with you? It means SWCP won't permit a machine that is not part of the SWCP trusted network to send email through our mail server to another non-SWCP address. If you are dialing in to another ISP, we have to find some way of identifying you as someone we can trust.

Sending email doesn't require authentication with a user name and password, the method we'd normally use to identify someone. Fortunately, though, receiving mail does, and we can use that to make a temporary exception in our defenses.

If you've dialed into an ISP other than SWCP (or if you are using iPass), you'll need to check mail before you try to send out any email through our server. Once you're done this (even if you don't have any pending email) your current IP address will be temporarily added to our "trusted" users and you'll be able to send email.

Reading News
In order to keep the news server available and responsive for our customers, SWCP doesn't allow non-customers to use it. Unfortunately if you're connected to the Internet via another ISP, we won't automatically know you're one of our customers. There are several work-arounds for this.

* You can telnet into login.swcp.com and use a local news program on our machines. From our menu program select "Mail & News", then "Read News". The default news reader is tin. Commands for tin are displayed on the bottom two lines of your telnet window while you're running tin.
* If you have a Static IP address you can contact SWCP and we'll add your address to our list of "trusted" news readers.
* If you don't have a static IP address and you need to regularly read news remotely we can set up a username and password for you.

Accessing Email via the web
We're also experimenting with several web based email packages. We've had good luck with them and it may be useful to you if you want to read email from something like an Internet Cafe. See the Webmail link from the left navigation menu of our main site.

If you're using this from an Internet cafe there are a couple of security items to be aware of. Be sure to exit your browser after using webmail (so your password isn't saved). Also be sure to answer "No" if you are prompted to save your password.

The Internet domain name system was "deregulated" in the late 1990's. This help to unclog a severely congested name registration system by decentralizing it. Where there was one a single internet registrar, there are now dozens of licensed registrars, operating under the accreditation of ICANN, an international organization created to keep order in the wild west of domain systems.

Now that there are so many players, each with their own world views, working structures, financial goals, and regional cultural influences, the Internet domain name system can be a tricky place. Along with deregulation have come many scammers and con men, operating outside, or often right on the line, of the rules. They do things like send domain owners official-looking renewal notices in the mail or by fax. In reality these notices are offers to have you transfer your domain to their service (often at inflated rates). But they are crafted to look like invoices and they successfully dupe thousands of businesses into paying them each year.

These scammers are just one example of the difficulty in managing a domain name in this environment. When you receive a renewal notice, is it legitimate or a scam? The penalty for missing your renewal could be disastrous (your web site could go dark!)

* The list administrator and moderators are not automatically allowed to post.

This allows for the separation of content makers versus list management.
At least, I guess that's the theory.

Allowing list members post
If you look at the Membership Management page you'll see the "Mod" checkbox.
This stands for "moderated". If it is checked the message will not immediately
be posted. It will be dealt with by the policy set in "Privacy Options"->"Sender Filters"->
"Action to take when a moderated member posts to the list". This can be set to
Hold, Reject, or Discard.

Hold
Messages that are caught by the Hold policy will appear in the
"Tend to pending moderator requests"

Reject
Messages that are caught by the Reject policy will be discarded,
but a reject message will be send to the originator.

Text for the rejection message can be set in "Privacy Options"->"Sender Filters"->
"Text to include in any rejection notice to be sent to moderated members who post to this list."

Discard
These messages are simply discarded.

IMPORTANT NOTE
If you want your list members moderated you need to also set
"Privacy Options"->"Sender Filters"->"By default, should new list member postings be moderated? "
to Yes. Otherwise new members will be allowed to post to the list.

Allowing non-list members post
In "Privacy Options"->"Sender Filters"-> "List of non-member addresses whose postings should be automatically accepted."
list all non-member email addresses that should be automatically accepted for posting.
This includes the list owner and/or moderators who are not list member if you want them
to be able to post.

On the "Privacy Options"->"Sender Filters" page you can also set a list of non-members
whose posts you'd like to hold and look at.

"List of non-member addresses whose postings will be immediately held for moderation."
Question or Symptom
I get a number of cryptic messages back from the Mailman list server
when I try to post to a list. What's the deal? Can you explain them?

Resolution
Sure. Mailman like most list servers makes sense to postmasters and not too much
to anyone else. Here are several common issues that come up when posting.

1. too many recipients
"Please trim the recipient list; it is too long."
This means you had more than 10 people listed in the To: field. Why is this
bad? It most often is used by spammers to send large amounts of junk mail
with relative ease. The MM folks recommend just sending a message to the
mailing list alone then if you wanted to send it to several other people,
send a copy to your list of people.

2. post held for approval, moderated list
This means the list you've sent a message to is moderated. A human looks at
each message and decides whether it's appropriate for the list or not. Your
message won't go out to the list until the moderator has reviewed it.

3. post is rejected, not member of list
This means the mailing address you've posted from is not recognized as
being a member of this "members only" mailing list. It's possible you've
put an alternative address in your email client's setup or that you've
sent mail from a machine that created an odd email address for you. For
example, if you're subscribed as "tori@swcp.com" and you send some email
from one of our Unix machines, if might create a from address of:
tori@llama.swcp.com
These two addresses won't match and your post will be rejected.

4. Message has implicit destination
"Blind carbon copies or other implicit destinations are not allowed. Try
reposting your message by explicitly including the list address in
the To: or Cc: fields."

Blind carbon copy or BCC: is used to send to someone without that email
address appearing in any of the headers. It's used sometimes to let a third
party in on a conversation without one of the members knowing that. It is
widely abused by spammers to send you email you don't want. This is why
Mailman prohibits messages with BCCs. The simple fix is send the message
to the list in the To field. Don't add additional people in the BCC. Just
send them a copy of the message.
Mailman

Question or Symptom
I get a number of cryptic messages back from the Mailman list server
when I try to post to a list. What's the deal? Can you explain them?

Resolution
Sure. Mailman like most list servers makes sense to postmasters and not too much
to anyone else. Here are several common issues that come up when posting.

1. too many recipients
"Please trim the recipient list; it is too long."
This means you had more than 10 people listed in the To: field. Why is this

Resolution
For reasons no-one understands (OK, I don't understand) this mailman field
need to be only lowercase. So, if JohnnyBadBoy@aol.com is being a pain,
you need to add him to your block list as johnnybadboy@aol.com.

Yes, I know this isn't consistant with the membership list, but that's the
way it works.

|+Mailman Common Questions
|-
! Q !! Question !! Answer
|-
! Q1
| What's the difference between a list administrator and a list moderator? ||
A list admin can control all of the settings for a mailing list, including whose on the list, how it's sent, and what's acceptable to post. A list moderator can handle messages that are held for moderation, ( accept, reject, etc ).
|-
! Q2
| I'm getting a ton of spam! Help! I don't want to have to reject all this spam by hand. ||
Privacy Options -> Senders Filters: Non-member section<br>
Action to take for postings from non-members for which no explicit action is defined<br>
Set to Discard.
|-
! Q3
| I want a completely open list, so anyone can post. ||
This is a bad idea. Spammers will abuse this badly.
If you must...<br>
Privacy Options -> Senders Filters: Non-member section<br>
Action to take for postings from non-members for which no explicitaction is defined<br>
Set to Accept.
|-
! Q4
| I want an announce-only mailing list. I just want me and George to be able to send messages to it. ||
Set up Post only:<br>
Before adding any members to the list<br>
Privacy Options-->Sender filters, first item<br>
By default, should new list member postings be moderated?<br>
Set this to Yes. The next item is<br>
Action to take when a moderated member posts to the list
By default this is '"Hold"', you can set to '"Discard"', often done for a advertising list.
<p>
Part 2: Setting up the allowed posters.<br>
1. If they're on the list, go to Member management-->Find the person's email address,<br>
uncheck the "Mod" checkbox. That person is now allowed to post.<br>
2. If they're not on the list, go to Privacy Options--> Sender Filters<br>
Add the non-member address to the textarea box labelled
List of non-member addresses whose postings should be automatically accepted.<br> One address per line.
|-
! Q5
| On the first of the month ... '"Who is swcp and why are you sending me this message?"' ||
This is the reminder message giving the list member their password. A list may be configured to do this or not. To check and/or change this option go to General Options. About 1/2 down the page is an item<br>
Send monthly password reminders?<br>
Set appropriately.
|-
! Q6
| What mailing list am I on? I threw that message away. ||
Send a message to help@swcp.com. The NOC group has a way of finding this info easily, but it isn't available to the general public.
|-
! Q7
| How do I ban a member from posting? ||
Go to Membership Management, find the email address in question and set the "mod" check box. Then go to <br>Privacy Options-->Sender Filters and check on the settings for<br>
Action to take when a moderated member posts to the list
and set to Hold, Discard or Reject depending on what you want to do with those posts.
|-
! Q8
| Archives, what's the deal with them? ||
By default we turn on archiving and we have no specific quota limit, however large lists will be subject to trimming as the need arises. We will generally notify the list owner when this happens. You should decide if you want your archives to be public or private (list members only). By default archives are public.
|-
! Q9
| What does '"A non-text attachment was scrubbed..."' mean? ||
This means the list is set up to do content filtering and someone sent a non-text message to the list and MM quarantined that part of the message. Probably
their email client is configured to send HTML mail. If you want people to be able to post HTML, check the Content Filtering section and either set the list to
not have content filtering, or add text/html to the list of acceptable MIME types.
|-
! Q10
| I don't remember my password, can you send it to me? ||
Depends, are we talking about the list admin password? or a subscriber password.<br><br>

A. list admin - No, we can't retrieve it. We can reset it. Send a message to help@swcp.com<br><br>

B. subscriber password - Go to Member management, find the email address of the subscriber, click on it. You'll be taken to a configuration page. Part way done is Forgotten Your Password?<br>
Click on the Email by Password to Me button.
|-
! Q11
| Bounce processing - what's the deal with it? ||
MM attempts to automatically process bounces. There is an entire section devoted to settings for this involving a fairly convoluted algorithm for calculating a "bounce score". Mostly you should leave this alone, but we aware that a member can get "suspended" for bouncing too often. If that happens you will see the "Nomail" check box checked for that member in the Member Management section. There will be a B in the reason field. If the reason field is set to A, this means the list admin stopped them from receiving mail from the list. A U means the subscriber disabled mail delivery and a ? means MM doesn't know why but the subscriber isn't receiving email.
|-
! Q12
| Can I (or you) bulk load my list? ||
Sure. Go to Membership Management-->Mass Subscription. You need a list formatted with one email address per line. You can cut and paste them into the textarea, or specify a file to upload. BEFORE YOU DO THIS set the Send welcome message to new subscribees? to No! Otherwise you'll be sending out unexpected messages to your subscribers.<br><br>
If the list is > 500 items, ask SWCP to upload the file for you. There are some timeout issues that may result in only a partial list being uploaded.
|-
! Q13
| I don't see an unsubscribe link in the emails? ||
MailMan puts some unsubscribe headers in the email, but not all email programs display those.

If you want to add an email unsubscribe link, go to Non-digest options and add this to "Footer added to mail sent to regular list members":

Unsubscribe email: listnamehere-leave@mailman.swcp.com

If you want a website link, Go to Non-digest options. Set '"Should Mailman personalize each non-digest delivery?"' to Yes. For '"Footer added to mail sent to regular list members"', add:

Unsubscribe link: %(user_optionsurl)s

|-
! Q14
| Why did my list post bounce with "Reason: too many recipients?" ||
Your message was sent to the list as well as many other email addresses at the same time. As part of Mailman's anti-spam provisions it limits the number of other addresses that can be sent to. Work-arounds include just sending the message to your list and then sending a second copy to the other addresses. Or create a larger mailing list incorporating all or most of your other addresses.

|-
!Q15

__NOTOC__
Who can make changes to your account?
The primary account holder ONLY
The Primary account holder is responsible for the account. Only the primary account owner or their designated agent can make billing changes, request new services or receive password information.

Why so strict?
We've had divorced wives cancel their husband's accounts; divorced husbands demand to read their wife's email; disgruntled employees try to cancel their employer's web services, etc.

Our policies are to protect you.

Can I designate someone else to make changes?
Sure. You can have anyone you authorize make changes for you. You can do this from the Members Section of our website, or you can tell us in writing that you want to do this. Our mechanism for alternative account management is the Account Contact. You can specify an Account Contact that is authorized to make any changes, or you can restrict this person to certain types of changes. For example, a company may hire a web designer and set up a secondary account for them to use for the website. You may want to delegate web design issues to this person, but not give them full control of the account.

Secondary accounts
A secondary account holder doesn't have any special privileges regarding the account. The account is always owned by the primary account holder. One common type of account delegation is to specify a secondary account holder as an account contact with authority to make changes to their account only.

But I own the company
Selecting the account owner and account contacts is a important decision. We consider whoever has signed the SWCP contract to be the account owner. If the account should be owned by the company, be sure and check the "Corporate Account" check box on the sign-up form. This will make changing account owners easier.

SWCP Fees
Sign-up fees are $20. Domain Name registration is available for a $20 initial fee, with a $20 per year renewal fee. Customer may request shell access for PPP/Circuit(DSL/Frame Relay)/Web Hosting/Remote Access accounts.

Users are given 20 megabytes (MB) of permanent disk space for storage of personal files. Additional disk space may be purchased for $0.20 per MB per month (lower rates for larger quantities are available). Temporary storage is available for short-term needs at no extra charge.

A single household or business may purchase secondary accounts for $5 each per month plus connect time charges. All connect time for an account group is billed to the primary account at the same rate, based on their chosen Pricing Plan. The monthly minimum refers to the sum of all usage by the account group. Each secondary account has its own shell login, email address, and 20 MB of storage space. Additional POP-only email boxes with 20 MB of storage and no shell login are available for $2.50 per month. Customers may have email aliases created for free.

Customers may receive discounts by paying in advance: 5% for 6 months and 10% for 1 year. If the customer uses more than their allotment during a given month, the pre-paid funds will be used to cover the difference. Thus, the pre-paid deposit may be used up before the stated pre-payment period ends. In this case, the customer will be invoiced at the appropriate time. If a customer's account is terminated by SWCP or the customer, the unused portion of the pre-paid fees (starting at the end of the month of termination) will be returned.

Pricing for other services, such as dedicated line service or large group rates, are available on request.

General Policies
* Technical Support: SWCP will provide technical support, as it pertains to SWCP's system or the Internet in general, via telephone, in our office, or via e-mail. If an on-site visit or if unusually large amounts of support are required, as solely determined by SWCP, those additional services may be purchased at SWCP's regular consulting rate. All phone calls to and from SWCP are recorded for training purposes.

* Passwords: User passwords should be chosen with care. A good password is one which is not the name of any person or thing and does not appear in any dictionary. Intermixing upper and lower case letters and numbers, concatenating two nonsense words, or creating an acronym from a silly phrase are all good ways to pick a password. Some examples of good passwords are "akld8s3", "FLaiCy8", "brubmowt", or "chlfts". Some bad passwords are "password", "mustang", "SANDIA", "billy", or "spaceman". SWCP may periodically run a password checking program which will notify you if your password is too easy to guess, but if a computer "cracker" gains access to your account by guessing your password you will be responsible for the charges he or she accumulates and any damage done. It is a good idea to change your password every 3 to 6 months.

* Other Networks: Remember that the Internet is not one homogeneous network but rather a loosely connected collection of networks all over the world. Each network has its own set of policies and conditions governing its use. You should make yourself familiar with the policies of any network whose resources you're using.

* Spam: SWCP prohibits the use of unsolicited commercial email, commonly known as "spam", when mailed through SWCP's servers, or when used from any server to advertise a website or other service located on our servers. This also includes inappropriate commercial postings to the Usenet news network.

* Login Names: Your login name, also called a user name or email name, is the name that you use to identify yourself when you access SWCP's computer system. This name is also incorporated into your email address. Common user names that many people use are their first name, or last name, or first initial and last name, or 3 initials, or a nickname. Some examples are "costlow", "mcostlow", "mark", and "mec". The only restriction is that the name must be less than 16 characters and it must be unique on our system. The account request form allows you to choose your own name; if there is some reason that we cannot grant your chosen name, we will contact you so that you can choose another one. Note that although your login name is used as your email address (e.g. costlow@swcp.com), when you send electronic mail your real name will also appear in the message.

* Aliases: If you have registered a Domain Name with us, you can have aliases within that domain that forward to your SWCP login name. For example: if you own costlow.org as a domain and your logname is mcostlow, you could setup an email address mike@costlow.org that forwarded to the mcostlow email box. You can manage these yourself from the Members Control Panel.

* Account Groups: A single business or household which purchases an account (the primary account) may purchase extra accounts (secondary accounts) for a nominal monthly fee. All secondary account users must return a signed User Contract in addition to the one returned by the primary account user and are also responsible for complying with all SWCP Policies. Connect time for an account group is billed to the primary account; the primary account user is responsible for all connect time incurred by all accounts in the group. Invoices state the amount of connect time used by each account. All accounts in the group must be billed according to a single Pricing Plan. The monthly minimum time commitment is applied to the sum of all connect time for all accounts in the account group.
