====Question or Symptom====
I thought I saw a message about Telnet going away. Is that true?

====Resolution====
Secure Shell (SSH) Will Replace Telnet at Southwest Cyberport
on October 15, 2001

Beginning October 15, 2001 Southwest Cyberport will no longer accept telnet
connections. Only users of our UNIX shell accounts will be affected by this
change. If you do not know what Telnet or a shell account are you can safely
ignore this message (only 6.4% of Internet users use telnet). This change
will *not* affect any other service, such as web browsing, email, FTP, or
Usenet News.

Only SSH access to shell accounts will be allowed. We do not wish to
discourage remote logins. However, we strongly believe it is neccessary for a
secure protocol like SSH to be used for remote logins. If you're interested
in more information about why SSH is important you should visit
http://www.openssh.org/faq.html#1.2

There are other common protocols in use which are also insecure such as POP
and IMAP. We have decided to eliminate Telnet first largely because there is
a widely-available replacement, SSH. We will be working to provide secure
versions of the other protocols in the near future.

If you do not already have an SSH client and you intend to login to our UNIX
network, you will need to install one. There are many free and commercial
versions readily available:
