====Question or Symptom====
Problem is that you have a Windows 2000 customer who definently is not
getting DNS name resolution. They are connecting, they can ping and web
surf by IP address, but they can not ping or surf by hostname. Once you
identified that they had a DNS problem, you checked all their DNS
settings. They have the right IP address for the DNS servers, and you
can find nothing wrong with their configuration.

====Resolution====
Windows 2000 has a DNS Client service that, by default, starts automatically
when the machine is booted.
To find it, go to Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Services. Find the DNS
Client in the list and doubleclick on it.

When the window comes up, click the <STOP> button. Now try and see if DNS is
working.

If it is working, in that window where you stopped the client, make sure you
change the configuration so that the service does not start automatically on
reboot.
