New page

==Thunderbird Version 3 Setup Is Confusing==
Version 3 of Thunderbird defaults all new mail accounts to IMAP. If you want to use POP instead of IMAP, read on:

When you first do "add new account" and it asks for your name/username/password, then you click Continue, and it defaults the account to IMAP. The "Manual Setup" button just gives you a lame error message and does nothing, which was pretty confusing. The "Edit" button looks like it's only going to let you change the username, but if you click it you can actually change '''all''' the settings.

So, click the "Edit" button and change the server to mail.swcp.com, protocol to POP, port to 995 (it doesn't auto-update the port number,
lame!) and security protocol to SSL/TLS. Hit the Re-Test button, and it should successfully test.

If you have already created an IMAP account, it's possible to change it to a POP account. But, Thunderbird will have created some "local folders" for the IMAP account and they won't go away when you convert it to POP. They're not useful for the POP account, but they may be confusing. It's better to delete the IMAP account and create a new account to use POP as above.

==POP or IMAP?==
SWCP provides both POP and IMAP access to your email. You can use either one. We support both and don't plan to phase out either one.

In general, if you read email from a single computer, POP is the simplest to set up and use. Every time you read mail, your computer downloads all your messages and they are deleted from the server.

If you access mail from more than one computer, you might prefer to use IMAP. The messages are left on the server and can be accessed from any computer until they are deleted. It's more important for you to delete unneeded messages with IMAP, since they will pile up on the server rather than on your local computer.

If you use a smartphone (iPhone, Droid, Blackberry, etc) to access your mail, use IMAP on both the mobile device and your desktop. IMAP works much better than POP when two devices are trying to access your mailbox at the same time.
