====Question or Symptom====
What is a software-modem? (winmodem, rpi, etc.)

====Resolution====
A software-driven modem is a modem that requires special drivers to
function properly, or at all. Normal modems require no special
special drivers.

Examples are Rockwell RPI, Rockwell HCF, and some Winmodem models.

If you suspect you have a software-modem, see your manufacturers web
site for the latest drivers, which must be installed.
