With WordPress 3.7 we got a new feature of auto-updating your website. This is probably a good idea for sites with not many plugins, and it was not enabled by default, so you could use it or not.
Now with WordPress 3.8 the feature is turned on my default. This may be a problem for folks with older plugins or large plugins with lots of functionality, or even with sites that are undergoing some current renovation. It's not difficult to turn off, but you do need to edit wp-config.php. The easiest fix is to simply turn this feature off at all levels. You can do this by adding the following line to wp-config.php.
define( 'AUTOMATIC_UPDATER_DISABLED', true );
