Posting to a Mailman List

  • The list administrator and moderators are not automatically allowed to post.

This allows for the separation of content makers versus list management. At least, I guess that's the theory.

Allowing list members post

If you look at the Membership Management page you'll see the "Mod" checkbox. This stands for "moderated". If it is checked the message will not immediately be posted. It will be dealt with by the policy set in "Privacy Options"->"Sender Filters"-> "Action to take when a moderated member posts to the list". This can be set to Hold, Reject, or Discard.

Hold

Messages that are caught by the Hold policy will appear in the "Tend to pending moderator requests"

Reject

Messages that are caught by the Reject policy will be discarded, but a reject message will be send to the originator.

Text for the rejection message can be set in "Privacy Options"->"Sender Filters"-> "Text to include in any rejection notice to be sent to moderated members who post to this list."

Discard

These messages are simply discarded.

IMPORTANT NOTE

If you want your list members moderated you need to also set "Privacy Options"->"Sender Filters"->"By default, should new list member postings be moderated? " to Yes. Otherwise new members will be allowed to post to the list.

Allowing non-list members post

In "Privacy Options"->"Sender Filters"-> "List of non-member addresses whose postings should be automatically accepted." list all non-member email addresses that should be automatically accepted for posting. This includes the list owner and/or moderators who are not list member if you want them to be able to post.

On the "Privacy Options"->"Sender Filters" page you can also set a list of non-members whose posts you'd like to hold and look at.

"List of non-member addresses whose postings will be immediately held for moderation."
