Internet Explorer (Mac) displays gibberish characters.
Article:56 Created:2000-05-18 00:38:36 Categories: MacOS-9
Question or Symptom
Microsoft Internet Explorer for the Macintosh displays gibberish characters in place of the normal text that should appear on a webpage. Oftentimes, the gibberish characters are *extremely* numerous, making for slow loading times and completely incorrectly displayed pages. This occurs with older versions of MacOS. (i.e. MacOS 8 or older).
Resolution
The version of the 'Text Encoding Converter' extension installed on the system is incompatible. Sometimes IE will install a version that comes with its software, a version too old for the System Software.
To resolve this, install the Text Encoding software from the System installer CD. This is commonly found in the 'International' subset of software, as part of a customized installation.
