Question or Symptom

Telnet, ping, and seeing the arp table in an actiontec

Resolution

I had asked the Actiontec folks about the telnet interface for the
Actiontec, since I could find no documentation on it. They said they do
not support a telnet interface. We could telnet to the router, we had
guessed the default login of admin/admin. But commands did not work, and
the router often froze. After nagging the Actiontec folks long enough,
they finally coughed up some info about the telnet interface. After
logging in, you must issue the magic command, "console enable."
Now the commands seem to work, and the router hasn't crashed yet. Wonder of
wonders, you can ping with the command, "ip ping [host]". It is a poor
ping that simply returns one reply, with no stats, but thank god there
is at least that much. You can also see the ARP table with the command,
"ip arp". The command "help" will show available commands, and
"[command] help" will display further options. It looks there is
actually a fair bit you can do, but there is no reference, sicne
Actiontec does not officially support it. Feel free to explore. Rus
