Restricting posts to a majordomo mailing list Article ID: 13 Created: Feb-15-2001 Question or Symptoms

   How do I restrict postings to my majordomo list?

Resolution

   Majordomo supports an option to restrict postings to members of the list
   That way people who are not subscribed to your list can't send spam to it.
   To set that option, change the restrict_post item in the config file for the
   list. If you set it to the name of the list, posts will be restricted to
   members of the list. For example, if your list was called "the-list", you
   would set restrict_post as follows:

   restrict_post       = the-list

   If your list has an associated digest, you need to allow members of the digest
   list to post as well as members of the main list. You would do that like so:

   restrict_post       = the-list:the-list-digest

   If you wanted to restrict posts to a select list of people that you maintain
   (e.g. if your list is only for one-way posting of information and only a
   couple of people should be allowed to post messages), you can set
   restrict_post to the name of a text file which you maintain. For example if
   your list was called "the-list" and your SWCP username was "fred", you would
   set restrict_post as follows:

   restrict_post       = /users/fred/the-list-post.txt

   Then create or upload the file the-list-post.txt and list the email addresses
   of the people that are allowed to post to the list, one per line. If you are
   uploading the file from a Windows or Macintosh system, be sure to transfer the
   file in "ASCII" or "Text" with your FTP program.
