Efficient 5851 SDSL router firmware upgrade

Question or Symptom

You need to upgrade the firmware on a 5851 SDSL router.

Resolution

Efficient Upgrade

Make sure it is really an Efficient 5851 SDSL router. If you do this to an IDSL router, you will break it.

You can download a new version of the router software from the tftp server at 216.184.2.9. The following steps show you how to copy the software across the WAN into the router's flash memory.

1. Log in to the command line interface of the router

2. Copy the kernel software into the flash memory with the following commands:

 copy tftp@216.184.2.9:<kernel file name> kernel.f2k
 save all
 sync
 

The "copy" command copies the kernel file from the tftp server to the router, and renames it kernel.f2k. The "sync" command IS neccessary. It makes sure that the software is saved after rebooting.

3. Reboot with the "reboot" command.

 reboot
 

The router should reboot and sync back up. The "version" command will report the version of the router software that the router is using. It should now be version 5.1.0.
