Question or Symptom

I have web publishing services with SWCP, but how do I upload my web pages?

Resolution

This document explains how to upload your web page files to SWCP's server and what URLs to use to access them. If you need information about authoring HTML, see http://www.swcp.com/swcp/html-links.html which has pointers to several useful resources.

There are two steps to making your pages available on the World Wide Web.:

   1. Create your web pages. Call the main page "index.html" (or
       "index.htm" for Windows 3.1 users).
   2. Put your web pages in your public_html directory on our server.

The URL to use to access your page will depend on whether you have a personal/non-profit page or a business web site. If you are setting up a person web page, your URL will be:

       http://www.swcp.com/~loginname/

Where "loginname" is replaced with your email username.

If you have a commercial web page, your files will be stored on our business web server and you can use the name "biz.swcp.com" instead of "www.swcp.com". "biz" is our commercial web server and is faster than "www". Also note that if you are using the commercial server, you don't need the "~" in your URL. So, your URL would be:

       http://biz.swcp.com/loginname/

If you have your own domain name registered with SWCP, you can also use it in your URL, e.g.:

       http://www.yourdomain.com/loginname/

If you have chosen the "virtual server" option, you can use this URL:

       http://www.yourdomain.com/

               Instructions for Uploading HTML Pages

After you've created your web pages, you'll need to upload them to our server using an FTP program. The following sections explain how to do that using various different FTP programs on several different types of systems. Find the section that matches your system and follow those instructions.

In the examples that follow, we use a ficticious user, Fred Farmer, whose username is "fred". When you set this up on your computer, you should substitute your own username for "fred".

Also note that before you connect with your FTP program, you need to establish a PPP connection with SWCP. Some systems are set up to automatically set up the PPP connectin when you run the FTP program, but some others will require you to dial in with another program before starting FTP (e.g. Dialup Networking on Win95 or Trumpet on Win3.1).

One final note: When you access a URL which does not end in a filename, the server will automatically look for a file called "index.html" or "index.htm" and return that to the browser if it is found. This shorthand lets you use a URL such as http://www.swcp.com/~fred/ instead of having to spell out the whole thing as http://www.swcp.com/~fred/index.htm . That is why we recommend that you use "index.html" or "index.htm" as the name for your main page.

We have instructions for the these systems:

   * WS_FTP for Windows 3.1 and Windows 95
   * QFTP for Windows 3.1 and Windows 95
   * FTP for Windows 95 and Windows NT
   * Fetch for Macintosh
   * Netscape 2.0 or higher on any platform

Uploading with WS_FTP on Microsoft Windows

Open WS_FTP program, press the "New" profile button and fill in the following information:

    Profile Name: SWCP-Fred
    Host Name: ftp.swcp.com
    Host Type: auto detect
    User ID: fred
    Password: *******
    Remote Host: public_html

Clicked OK. WS_FTP should log in to SWCP's FTP server now. In the "local system" you should see a listing of the files on your computer. In the "remote system" window (right side) you should see your empty "public_html" directory.

Navigate to the directory containing your web pages in the "local systems" window (it works similarly to the File Manager). Click on the file you want to upload (e.g. "index.htm"). Then click the right-arrow button (->) to send the file from the local system (your PC) to the remote systems (SWCP's computer). Now you can access the file in a web browser using one of the URLs mentioned at the beginning of this document, for example:

   http://www.swcp.com/~fred/

Uploading with QFTP from Quarterdeck InternetSuite on Microsoft Windows

If you are using the QuarterDeck Internet Suite, QFTP is the program to use to transfer the files from your machine to ours.

Open QFTP and fill out the "Open Connection to FTP Service" window:

    Host: ftp.swcp.com
    Username: fred
Password: ****** (This is the same password used for checking email)
    Directory: public_html

Also click the check box for "Save Password Between Services". Then click the Connect button.

You should see a directory listing on the left hand side of QFTP and and a link to the Parent Directory with a few files beneath it on the right. Then click the File Manager Button in the QFTP. This opens the file manager on one side of the screen and moves QFTP to the other. Now find your "index.htm" file in the file manager and drag it to the QFTP side.

On the "Send File(s) to Remote Host" window, click OK. (All the info should be set correctly). A status window will pop up and when it reaches 100%, click OK. You have now uploaded his first HTML file and can view it using QuarterDeck Mosaic at the location:

    http://www.swcp.com/~fred/

Uploading with a command-line version of FTP

If you are using Windows 95 (or Windows NT) and do not have a Windows-based FTP program, there is a (somewhat primitive) FTP program which is included with Win95 and NT. To run it, go to START->RUN and enter the following in the dialog box:

    ftp ftp.swcp.com

A window should pop up and prompt you for your username and password:

    User (kumo.swcp.com:(none)): fred
    331 Password required for fred
Password: ***** (this is the same password used for email)

After seeing the Welcome to Southwest Cyberport message, enter the following commands:

    ftp> cd public_html
    ftp> binary
    ftp> put c:\...\index.html
    ftp> bye

For the "put" command, use the real path to your HTML file on your system. The file is now uploaded to our server and you can view the web page at:

    http://www.swcp.com/~fred/

Uploading with Fetch on a Macintosh

If you're going to be uploading files regularly, it's a good idea to create a "shortcut" for your SWCP FTP account. To do that, run Fetch, then select Customize -> New Shortcut. This should bring up the Bookmark Editor. Then enter the following information:

    Name: swcp-html
    Type: Folder
    Host: ftp.swcp.com
    User ID: fred
    Password: *******
    Directory: public_html

Now click OK.

To connect to SWCP, select File -> New Connection. There should be a pull-down menu called "Shortcuts" in the "new connection" window. You'll find the shortcut you just created on that menu (e.g. "swcp-html"). Select it, then click OK. This will connect you to the SWCP FTP site.

To upload a file, click the "Put File" button in the Fetch window. This brings up a file selection dialog, from which you can select the file to upload from your local disk (e.g. "index.html"). After you click the Open button, a new dialog window will ask you to specify the type of the file. In general, the Format should be set to Text for any textual file (like an HTML file) and Raw Data for binary files (like images). IMPORTANT: ALWAYS upload graphics files (GIF and JPEG files) as RAW DATA. You shouldn't ever need to use the other format options -- "Text" for HTML files and "Raw Data" for graphics should be it.

Now to access your home page, the address is:

   http://www.swcp.com/~fred/

(Substitute your own login name for "fred")

                       Uploading with Netscape

NOTE: we don't recommend using Netscape to upload your files. It's possible to do, however it is not very efficient if you have more than a few html documents or images. Netscape FTP has no ability to rename files, create directories, or transfer several files at once. If you're going to be managing your web site on an ongoing basis, we recommend using a dedicated FTP program.

If you need to upload your files with Netscape, here is how:

Open Netscape while connected and enter the following in the "Location" field:

    ftp://fred@ftp.swcp.com/users/fred/public_html

Enter your password when prompted to do so. This is the same password that you use to retrieve your email. Under the Netscape File menu, choose Upload File, browse to find the "index.html" file, then click OK. The file is now uploaded and can be viewed at:

   http://www.swcp.com/~fred/
