Question or Symptom

Customer is using a Unix version of an ssh client (SSH, OpenSSH, etc.). They attempt to login, are having classic password failure problems. johndoe@ssh.swcp.com's password: Permission denied, please try again. johndoe@ssh.swcp.com's password: However, you have verified that they are using the correct password, because you can login with it.

Resolution

There is a system-wide ssh client config file. On an OpenBSD machine it is /etc/ssh_config. On RedHat 7.1 box it was /etc/ssh/ssh_config. In that file is the this line:

PasswordAuthentication yes

For them to be able to login, they must have "yes" at the end of the line, and the line must be uncommented. On some versions of SSH, it is NOT uncommented by default.
