Question or Symptom

You've recently updated Norton, now you're unable to send e-mail. You're probably receiving an error similiar to this: "Your email message to <address> with the subject <subject> was unable to be sent because the connection to your mail server was interrupted. Please open your email client and re-send the message from the Sent Messages folder." In the left hand corner of the screen, you may also see an error code from Norton, 1003-9.

Resolution

There are a few possible fixes for this issue. First, re-run Live Update for Norton. With any luck, they will have released a patch to correct the issue. Failing that, the first step is to disable e-mail scanning. Follow these instructions to do so:

  1. Close any open email programs.
  2. Start Norton AntiVirus.
  3. After the program opens, click the Options button.
  4. In the left pane, under the Internet heading, click Email.
  5. In the right pane, go to the "What to scan" section,
  6. Uncheck the "Scan outgoing Email" box.
  7. Click OK.
  8. Close Norton AntiVirus.

If this doesn't correct the problem, completely disable Norton. Do this by right-clicking the Norton AV icon (yellow monitor) on the taskbar (by the clock) and selecting "Disable" or "Disable Auto-Protect."

Failing that, the last option is to ultimately uninstall Norton and perform a reinstall at a later date.

If you need virus protection in the interim, there is an excellent anti-virus program we recommend. AVG (Anti Virus Guard), from Grisoft. It's free for personal use and won't interfere with your e-mail.
