Question or Symptom

When I use Eudora to start my internet connection I usually get the following error. "Error involving Domain Name System. -3208 {tcp:1109}" Why? What can I do about it? (Note: this is usually only on systems running an OS older than MacOS 9).

Resolution

This is a known problem. Here's what happens. If you start Eudora before

having an internet connection and try to check mail or send mail the first thing it does is do a DNS request. This triggers the TCP/IP layer of the system to realize it needs to make a modem connection, which it does, but often it takes longer than Eudora's timeout period for the DNS request. Hence you get the "Error involving Domain Name Server". If you immediately tried the same operation it would now succeed. The usual suggested work around is get the connection up first before starting Eudora, or ignore it's first complaint. Not particularly elegant, but I don't know of any way to set the timeout on that DNS query from Eudora.

Qualcomm reports this error should be fixed in versions of Eudora >= 4.2.

You can try upgrading if you're running an earlier version of Eudora.
