Question or Symptom

I can't find any place to add a modem init string in Remote Access or Apple's PPP, like I could with FreePPP. What do I do?

Resolution

Apple's Remote Access and PPP use a script called a CCL (connection control language). Unfortunately these are kind of long and obtuse to read through. They are text files, so you can look at and change one with a tool like BBEdit.

The first place to look for CCL files is your modem manufacturer's web site.

There are many sources on the net for CCL files. Several are distributed with our SWCP kit. In the Miscellaneous Folder there's a folder named either "OT/PPP Modem Scripts" or just "Modem Scripts". This contains subfolders for several different types of modems.

To install a new CCL, copy it to System Folder-->Extensions-->Modem Scripts. Now when you open the Modem control panel, you'll see the new CCL listed under Modem:

Below are several sources of CCL files. In addition the web site for your modem manufacturer should have a recommended CCL.

In addition you can pick up two CCLs from our FTP site that may help produce a more stable connection, if you're seeing lots of dropped connections or stalls while the modem retrains. These can be found at

Below is a URL for a site that has a number of CCLs for various modem types.
