Question or Symptom

What do I need to think about when configuring my Efficient DSL Router

Resolution

Questions To Ask Before Configuring

I. How many systems will I be connecting to the router?
       A. If 4 or less, I can plug them directly into the router's built-in
hub. If more than four, I'll need a hub of my own.

II. What cables will I need?
       A. If connecting straight to router's built-in hub, use regular,
           straight-through CAT 5 ethernet cable.
       B. For connecting my own hub to the router's hub, I can use a straight-
through if I have an uplink port on my hub. If no uplink port, I
           need a cross-over cable.

III. Will I use NAT?
       A. If I have public IP space, I will not use NAT.
       B. If I do not have public IP space (if I don't know what it is I
probably don't have it) then I will use NAT.

IV. Will I use DHCP?
       A. If I do use DHCP on my LAN, will the router do the DHCP, or some
           other device on my network.
       B. What IP ranges will I use?
               1. Is my LAN already numbered? If so, the ethernet address of
my router must fit in the same subnet as my LAN.
               2. If I have public space, I'll use my public subnet.
               3. If I am doing NAT, I will use one of the private ranges,
                   probably 192.168.1.0 255.255.255.0.

Configuring Network

I. IP information
       A. Are we doing DHCP?
               1. If the router is doing DHCP, reboot client machines.
               2. If some other device on the network is the DHCP server,
it most be configured to tell the clients about their new
gateway, and you should check DNS servers.
               3. If we are not using DHCP, then each workstation will have to
be configured to be on the same IP subnet as the router,
to use the router ethernet IP as the default gateway.
