Question or Symptom

I just got my MegaBit DSL line installed and now I need to configure my Cisco 675 or 678. How do I do that?

Resolution

The Cisco 675 and 678 are very similar. After April, 2001 Qwest is distributing only the 678. The configuration of both routers is the same with one exception, which is noted below. In general anything that refers to the "675" in this article applies to both models.

The first thing you need to check is if your Cisco came in bridging or routing mode. Many of them have been shipped in bridging mode. To find out, look at the bottom of the router. There will be a sticker with a line that looks like: Cisco675 Mode: If this is set at bridging we'll need to reset the router to PPP mode in order for it to work with SWCP. If you've set passwords using the "Commander" program make a note of these. We'll need them later.

Connect the blue management cable to the "MGMT" port on the back of the router and to the serial port on your computer. We'll be using Hyperterminal (or any other terminal program you're used to) in order to talk with the Cisco 675. Terminal program settings should be 8 bits, 1 stop bit, no parity, and no flow control. You should be making a "Direct" connection, not a dialup connection. Note: If you specify "Hardware flow control" you won't be able to talk to the router. Also note, any changes you make in HyperTerminal will not take effect until you exit and restart HyperTerminal.

The first screen you'll seen will ask for a Password. That should be the root password. (The first one you set). The second password is the enable password. The initial passwords are null, so if you didn't set a password or enable password with the Commander program you can just press enter at the password prompt.

To set the unit up for PPP mode we first need to flush the NVRAM. Type the following:

  enable
  set nvram erase
  write
  reboot

This is take a few minutes to reboot. Next we'll set up PPP.

  enable
  set ppp wan0-0 ipcp 0.0.0.0
  set ppp wan0-0 dns 0.0.0.0
  set ppp wan0-0 login Your_Email_Login
  set ppp wan0-0 password Your_Email_Login_Password
  set ppp restart enabled
  set dhcp server enabled
  set nat enabled
  write
  reboot

At this point any passwords you previously set will be gone, so you'll want to set a login and enable password. Please keep track of these!

   enable
   set password exec Your_Exec_Password
   set password enable Your_Enable_Password
   write

Your router should now be routing, serving DCHP, and doing Network Address Translation. Note: by default the Cisco 675 will use the 10.0.0.0/24 class C network as your IP space. The router will have IP address 10.0.0.1, and other machines on your network will be numbered starting at 10.0.0.2 from the router acting as a DHCP server.

If you have a 678 and your DSL protocol is DMT instead of CAP (all new Qwest DSL circuits after April, 2001 are DMT), then you need to enter these additional commands:

   set interface wan0-0 disable
   set interface wan0-0 vpi 0
   set interface wan0-0 vci 32
   set interface wan0-0 enable
   write
   reboot
