Configure K-9 on Android for SWCP Email

There are several email programs available for Android phones and tablets. K-9 is one that we find works well and is easy to set up.

Get K-9

Download the app from the Google app store. It is free.

Configure K-9

  • Start K-9, click "Next" on the Welcome screen to start the account creation wizard.
  • On the first setup screen:
    • Enter your email address and password.
    • Then click "Manual Setup" (do NOT click "Next").
  • On the "Account Type" screen, tap "IMAP"
  • On the "Incoming server settings screen":
    • The username field may be pre-filled with your email address. Change this to your SWCP account name.
    • The password should already be filled in.
    • Set the IMAP server to: mail.swcp.com
    • Set Security to SSL/TLS (always)
    • Set Authentication to PLAIN
    • Set Port to: 993
    • Leave the other settings as-is and tap "Next"
  • K-9 will test the connection to the server. Assuming that works, move on to "Outgoing server settings":
    • Set SMTP server to: mail.swcp.com
    • Set Security to SSL/TLS (always)
    • Set Port to: 465
    • Set Require sign-in to: ON (checked)
    • Set Authentication to: AUTOMATIC
    • The username and password should be auto-filled for you.
    • Click "Next" to complete the outgoing server test.
  • Now you are on the "Account options" page:
    • You can set these items to suit you. Enabling push mail might use a lot of battery, so if you find that y our battery is suddenly draining too quickly, try turning off Push mail.
    • Click "Next" to finish up
  • On the last setup screen, you give the account a name to identify it. Something like "SWCP mail" makes sense to you. If you set up multiple email accounts in K-9, this is how you will tell them apart.

About Folders

There's an issue with how K-9 mail (and Thunderbird) on Android deal with folders. It defaults to the setting "Automatic (None)" for special folders like Sent/Drafts/Spam etc. This leaves them unmapped, which will cause the email app to fail when it tries to send a message because it doesn't know where to save the "Sent" message. To fix this, go to Settings enter the "Folders" section and manually set the correct folders (map Sent to "Sent", Drafts to "Drafts", Spam to "spamfile").
