Can I share files over the internet with a Mac through my DSL connection?
Article:112 Created:2001-04-19 17:37:30 Categories: MacOS-9
Question or Symptom
I have DSL and I'm running MacOS 9. I'd like to use TCP/IP based file sharing, but I'm running NAT. What should I do?
Resolution
You need to configure your Mac to have a specific IP address (rather than use DHCP). Once this address is set you can call our staff and have them set up port forwarding for you. You'll need to forward port 548.
On an Efficient router that command looks like (if your Mac is 192.168.254.2): system addserver 192.168.254.2 tcp 548
Now someone at a remote site will select Chooser --> AppleShare -->Server IP Address. The IP address they need to specify will be the WAN address of your DSL router. (This means NOT the 192.168 address).
In File sharing you'll need to have allowed file sharing via TCP/IP.
