Change return address setting in various email packages
Article:12 Created:1999-09-01 16:39:54 Categories: E-mail
Question or Symptom
How do I change my From: or Reply-to: address in my mail program?
Resolution
If you have registered your own domain name, you may wish to use that domain in the email messages that you send. The following notes tell how to do that for several different email packages. Scroll down to the section for the email software you use and follow the instructions. You should substitute your own user name for the word "user", and your own domain name for "example.com".
If you have problems or if your favourite mailer is not mentioned here, let us know and we'll help you get it set up.
Eudora (Mac or Windows)
Select Special->Configuration and change the "Return Address" to user@example.com.
Leave the "POP Account" field set to user@swcp.com.
Netscape Mail (2.x or 3.x)
In Netscape, select Options->Mail and News Preferences. Then click the Identity tab. Set the Your Email field to user@example.com.
Netscape Mail (4.x)
In Netscape, select Edit->Preferences. Select Mail&Groups, then Identity. Set the "Email Address" field to user@example.com.
Leave the "Reply To" field blank.
Chameleon Mail
Select Settings->Preferences, click the "Advanced" button, and enter user@example.com as your From field.
AIR Mail (Internet in a Box)
Run the Configuration Utility. Select "Default Hosts". Change the "Email Address" field to user@example.com. Leave the POP3 Email and SMTP Relay hosts set to mail.swcp.com.
Pegasus Mail
Choose File->Network Configuration. Under "Outgoing (SMTP) Mail", set the From field to user@example.com.
PINE
There should be a file in your home directory called ".pinerc". Edit that file and search for the line that says "user-domain=". Change it to read:
user-domain=example.com
ELM
Elm will look for an environment variable called REPLYTO to fill in a default value for the Reply-To: field in your mail. It uses a variable called USERDOMAIN to determine what domain to put in the From: address of your email. You can set these variables by editing .environment in your home directory and adding the following lines:
REPLYTO user@example.com
USERDOMAIN example.com
QMC (QuaterDeck Mailer)
Open the location manager. Click on the Edit Connections and Locations button. Click on the Connections tab, then click on the settings button. Click on the Mail tab. You should change the email address field to reflect your domain:
user@example.com
Claris Emailer (Macintosh)
In Claris Emailer, select the Setup menu, then Easy Setup. Click the Next button until you get to a screen with a field for your email address. In the Email Address field, enter:
user@example.com
