Question or Symptom
I need to access our corporate LAN using a virtual private network. Can I do that through SWCP? How do I set it up?
Resolution
You can use a VPN over any of our services; dial-up, DSL, frame relay or point to point T1s. VPN is also available through our iPass service. Below is information on configuration. If you intend to use both the VPN and normal Internet functionality at the same time, please read article 111. (See below)
Windows 98
To set up a VPN dialup in Windows98 you must have a Microsoft Virtual Private Adapter and the protocol TCP/IP loaded.
To add the VPN adapter:
- Click Start->Settings->Control Panel and open the Network icon.
- Click the Add button and select Adapter. Click the Add button.
- Under Manufacturers: select Microsoft.
- Under Network Adapters: select Microsoft Virtual Private Adapter.
- Click the OK button.
To add the TCP/IP protocol:
- Click the Add button and select Protocol. Click the Add button.
- Under Manufacturers: select Microsoft.
- Under Network Adapters: select TCP/IP.
- Click the OK button.
- Click the OK button, and restart the computer.
Windows 2000
- From your desktop, right click the icon My Network Places and select properties.
- Open the icon Make New Connection.
- Select "Connect to a private network through the Internet" as your Network Connection Type
- If using SWCP set the "Public Network" screen to Do not dial the initial connection.
- Destination Address: This is the IP address of the server you'll be connecting to through your VPN.
- Connection availability: Set this as you'd prefer.
- Create a name you'll recognize for this connectoid, like "Corporate VPN", and we recommend clicking the "Add a shortcut to my desktop" so it will be easy to find.
