Question or Symptom

You require a VPN connection to upload files. How do I set that up with a Macintosh?

Resolution

If you're running MacOS 9 you'll have to purchase a PPTP client. There is one available from NTS, LAN TunnelBuilderTM priced at $99. More information can be found at http://www.efficient.com/products/builder.html

If you're running MacOS 10.1 you can download a free PPTP client at

The program is easily installed by copying a folder to the Applications folder. The default MTU is set to 1498, however we've had difficulty with this setting and recommend setting it to 512.

If you're running MacOS 10.2 PPTP is built into Internet Connect. To set up a connection start Internet Connect. From the File menu select New VPN connection. You'll be asked for the server address, your username and your password. The server name is iis.swcp.com. You should have your username and password. Be sure to include the domain as a prefix to your username, i.e. DOMAIN\username

Once you've established your VPN connection you can use the an FTP client or something like Go Live to upload your files to 172.20.0.3 (the IP address of the NT web server with the VPN). Note, we haven't had much luck using a MacOS 9 client in the MacOS X environment. We recommend using a native MacOS X client. Go Live works, FTP from a terminal window works. Fetch didn't work. Dreamweaver does work.
