How to cure 'slow logins' on Windows 95 and 98

Question or Symptom
Why does it forever for Windows dialup-networking to establish a connection?
Resolution
A common cause of 'slow logins' for Windows 95 and 98 users is that the default settings Windows Dial-Up Networking (DUN) has support for extra Microsoft protocols which are not really useful when connecting to the Internet. Turning off the options that access these unnecessary protocols can speed up the login process considerably.
First, double-click the My Computer icon, then double-click the Dialup Networking icon. You should see an icon there that represents the DUN profile for your Southwest Cyberport account (it's usually called "SWCP" but may have a different name). Right-click on this icon, and select Properties from the menu. Then click the Server Settings tab or button.
On that screen, there is an option called "Log on to network" -- make sure it's turned OFF. In the protocols section, make sure that only TCP/IP is selected (NetBEUI and IPX/SPX should be turned off).
Sometimes this problem can crop up mysteriously when you don't think anything has changed which should affect it. In particular, any time you install a new modem, or change the modem definition which a DUN profile is set to dial with, these settings in the DUN profile get automatically changed back to their default values.
