Question or Symptom

Just entering a group, not actually reading articles.

Resolution

In his .tin/tinrc there is a section called reread_active_file_secs. Default is 1200 seconds than it rereads the active file. Setting to 0 disables this. reread_active_file_secs=0

Also giving tin a few command line arguments will help in starting up....

tin -Q -r

-Q = Quick start

Just tried these options myself and tin started up very fast. I think these options will help in speeding up his news reading.

addendum

might what to add/change:

auto_reconnect=ON

to tinrc as well, so it doesn't wait for a response to reconnect
to server message.
