Can't disable Preview pane in Outlook Express, the option is grayed out

Question or Symptom

When I go to View-->Layout, I have a Preview Pane section, but the settings are all grayed out.

Resolution

    You have to actually be viewing a message in order to set these options.
    Don't assume you're safe just because you don't see the "show Preview
    Pane" box as being checked. If it's grayed out you have no information
    about your current settings.
