Question or Symptom

Is it possible to use iPass without the iPass client? With Windows CE, Palm Pilots, Linux, etc?

Resolution

iPass now has a client for Windows CE and PalmOS. It requires a Windows application to construct a small version of the phonebook. For this reason and because iPass doesn't have a Linux client, I'm leaving the following out of date article available.

iPass doesn't support this, but there are several hacks that have worked. The iPass phonebook contains information about each POP such as whether you need a script to get connected, or the POP recognizes the IPASS prefix. The easiest way to use iPass without the iPass client is to find an entry in the phonebook that has an IPASS/ in the script field. An iPass entry is made up of 12 fields on a line separated by vertical bars. The nineth field is the script field. It tells the dialer what script to use, or to use the IPASS/ prefix. For a POP that uses the IPASS/ prefix all you need to do is enter your loginname @swcp.com preceeded by the IPASS/ prefix into your dialing software. Use your swcp password for the password. For example:

  Username: IPASS/toad@swcp.com
  Password: myswcppassword

Enter the phone number from field 5 into the phone number field of your dialing software.

If you need a POP that requires an actual script, you'll need to have software that is capable of processing a script.

The following is a URL describing this process with a Windows CE device. http://www.cewindows.net/wce/ipass.htm
