Problems getting a Windows NT4 machine to connect
Article:76 Created:2000-08-19 10:41:29 Categories: Windows NT 4
Question or Symptom
I am having a problem getting my Windows NT4 machine to connect to SWCP. I have configured the machine according to the 'Windows NT 4.0 configuration notes' from your website. The modem will connect after I type my username and password in the login window. The phone number I use is 998 5999. The connection process stops and disconnects with an error window with these 2 messages; 'Registering your computer on the network....' and 'Error 720: No PPP control protocols configured.'
Resolution
This is a fairly common error. Here are several things to try.
1. Make sure that your NT box is configured to dial out. Windows NT version 4.0
1.Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then
double-click Network.
2.On the Services tab, click Remote Access Service, and then click
Properties.
3.Click Configure, and then click either Dial Out Only or Dial Out
And Receive Calls.
4.Click OK, click Continue, click Close, and then click Yes to
restart your computer when you are prompted.
2. You need to check and make sure that you RAS software has TCP/IP configured as the default protocol. Windows NT version 4.0
Edit the phone book entry on the remote access client used to dial
out to the TCP/IP PPP server. Select Network, PPP, and verify
that TCP/IP is the only protocol selected.
1) Open Dial-up Networking.
2) Select 'More' and select 'Edit entry and modem
properties...'.
(The 'Edit Phonebook Entry' dialog box appears.)
3) Click the 'Server' tab.
4) Select 'PPP: Windows NT, Windows 95 Plus, Internet' or
'Windows NT 3.1, Windows for Workgroups 3.11',
as applicable, from the 'Dial-up server type' drop-down list box.
5) Clear the 'NetBEUI' check box.
6) Click 'OK'.
