Entourage 2001 for Mac won't get mail

Question or Symptom

Entourage 2001 for Mac just "churns and churns" and won't download e-mail. When I snoop the connection, it seems to be hitting odd port numbers.

Resolution

Go to Tools, Accounts... Double-click on the account name. Click "Click here for advanced receiving options." Make certain "Override Default Port" is not clicked, with a strange port number in it, or change it to the correct port. (default is port 110)

Also check "Click here for advanced sending options." Make certain "Override default SMTP port" is not clicked, with another strange port number in it, or change it to the correct port. (default port is 25)

In this particular case, make sure there are no proxy settings selected: Edit, preferences, proxy tab.
