Web Hits Reports
The following is an annotated version of a webhits report. Explanations are highlighted in Bold.
World-Wide Web Access Statistics Last updated: Mon, 01 Jul 1996 03:38:19 (GMT -0600)
This is a monthly report, but the dailies are written the same way.
* Daily Transmission Statistics * Hourly Transmission Statistics * Total Transfers by Client Domain * Total Transfers by Reversed Subdomain * Total Transfers from each Archive Section

Totals for Summary Period: Jun 1 1996 to Jun 30 1996 Files Transmitted During Summary Period 2921
Note "files transmitted", which counts .html and graphics files separately. This is what we mean at SWCP when we say "hits."
Bytes Transmitted During Summary Period 14776881
Actual size of those files. In this case, almost 15 MB. Woo-hoo!
Average Files Transmitted Daily 97 Average Bytes Transmitted Daily 492563
These should be self-explanatory.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------- Daily Transmission Statistics %Reqs %Byte Bytes Sent Requests Date ----- ----- ------------ -------- |------------ 3.36 3.37 498485 98 | Jun 1 1996 2.26 1.50 221910 66 | Jun 2 1996 2.36 2.18 321881 69 | Jun 3 1996 3.12 2.87 424611 91 | Jun 4 1996 1.92 1.06 156928 56 | Jun 5 1996
. . . And so on. A guide to the ubiquitous headers:
%Reqs: percentage of the total hits for your page for this summary.
%Byte: Percentage of total bytes sent for your page for this summary.
Bytes Sent: How much stuff was sent, in bytes.
Requests: Number of hits for that time period.
Date: Self-explanatory.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hourly Transmission Statistics %Reqs %Byte Bytes Sent Requests Time ----- ----- ------------ -------- |----- 3.01 3.86 570396 88 | 00
Just like the reports by day of the month, above, but broken down for hourly averages.

It's fun to see all the different places your oglers come from. "Unresolved" means we can't figure out where they came from, because the remote server didn't give out the right info, usually. The vagaries of Internet.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------- Total Transfers by Reversed Subdomain
Reversing the domain gives a somewhat more meaningful ordering. Change the order of the words in the dots, and you have a proper domain, e.g., au.com.jeack = jeack.com.au, a commercial site in Australia.
%Reqs %Byte Bytes Sent Requests Reversed Subdomain ----- ----- ------------ -------- |------------------------------------ 16.47 17.39 2569941 481 | Unresolved 0.34 0.38 56408 10 | at.ac.tu-graz.icg 0.38 0.45 65899 11 | au.com.jeack 0.07 0.01 2130 2 | au.com.ozemail 0.10 0.02 3333 3 | au.com.thehub 0.07 0.01 2130 2 | au.com.wr 0.55 0.55 81349 16 | au.csiro.dhn 0.31 0.37 54335 9 | au.edu.anu 0.21 0.12 18025 6 | au.edu.canberra 0.27 0.35 51975 8 | au.edu.curtin 0.07 0.00 360 2 | au.edu.dstc 0.07 0.01 2130 2 | au.edu.flinders.ph 0.07 0.07 9761 2 | au.edu.unimelb.its
Tons of stuff deleted for brevity.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------- Total Transfers from each Archive Section
The nitty-gritty. Actual files that get sent. If you're selling space on your website, this tells you how to bill appropriately, if you're not using a flat rate.
%Reqs %Byte Bytes Sent Requests Archive Section ----- ----- ------------ -------- |------------------------------------ 11.67 4.38 646998 341 | /~cipher/ 1.13 0.59 87833 33 | /~cipher/22.jpg 0.34 0.03 3834 10 | /~cipher/b-c9509.pgn 10.27 0.79 116616 300 | /~cipher/back-arrow.gif 6.16 10.80 1595694 180 | /~cipher/ban.html 1.64 1.30 192336 48 | /~cipher/bansolution.html 0.65 0.84 123444 19 | /~cipher/blkmarbl.jpg
Various filenames.
4.52 0.34 50328 132 | Code 302 Redirected Requests 0.14 0.01 1124 4 | Code 401 Unauthorized Requests 2.77 0.23 34286 81 | Code 404 Not Found Requests
"Redirects" are when someone puts in, for example, "http://www.swcp.com/~cipher", and leaves off the last "/". The server figures out that you meant "http://www.swcp.com/~cipher/", and tells you to try again, which your client does automagically. Unauthorized requests are failures on restricted pages. Not Found is worth some bother to figure out--it means someone asked for a page, and the server said "nope, never heard of it." Often just a typo, but if the number is very big, you may have broken links on your page, or possibly some search engine has incorrect information about pages deeper into your web structure. If you've changed things around recently, you may see an increase in Not Found errors, as the search engines take some time to update.
